Nexans announces sub-supplier request for quotation for midshore installation of Empire Wind 1 project
Sep 16, 2024About Empire Wind 1
Empire Wind 1 offshore New York is being developed by Equinor, a leading energy company with more than 20 years of experience with offshore wind and a strong existing offshore wind portfolio with assets in key markets including the UK, Poland, Germany and South Korea. Empire Wind 1 is located 15-30 miles southeast of Long Island and spans 80,000 acres, with water depths of between approximately 75 and 135 feet.
Submarine Export Cables, Supply and Installation by Nexans
Nexans has won a cable order for Empire Wind 1 to supply and install the submarine export cables for Empire Wind 1. In total, this is two circuits of approximately 75 kilometers each, from the offshore substation to landfall at South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. The cables will be manufactured at Nexans’ facilities in Charleston, South Carolina, and will be installed and protected (by burial into the seabed) in the summer of 2025. The cable installation is split into three sections as shown in the image: nearshore, midshore and offshore.
Become a sub supplier for midshore cable installation
The midshore section consists of two cable lengths, each approximately 15.5km long, stretching from New York Lower Bay, crossing the Rockaway sandbanks, and reaching across the Federal Waters boundary. For subcontracting, Nexans has committed to working with local companies for goods and services wherever possible. At this time Nexans highly encourages NY State companies with capacity to conduct the midshore cable installation in summer of 2025, or with capacity to provide assistance with parts of this scope, to reach out and express interest.
